The Upton Cello – Custom Commission

Upton Bass Cello

Custom design and select wood choices

We invite you to consider the building of a commissioned double bass, hand made in our workshop in Mystic Connecticut.

Our first cello offering, the Montagnana model, is built from a larger historic cello pattern. We are also able to copy existing cellos or develop one from a stylistic school which suits your playing.

All Upton Cellos are built from the finest seasoned wood stock and hand built over an interior frame in the Italian method.

We build to order and can work with your budget, starting at advanced Hybrids that start at $6,000, simple carved models starting at $8,500 and extravagant models using exotic and figured woods.

Our unique position as award-winning double bass makers (who also make cellos) allows us to use woods that traditional luthiers may shy from but have proven themselves to work quite well with basses.  These woods are typically not used by cello makers as they “fear” not being able to sell their creations as it is such a traditional field.  We approach our cellos with the same bravado we do our basses, and our clientele appreciates the dark chocolatey tones we coax from our instruments while appreciating our “unconventional” wood choices.
