Upton Gagliano Double Bass

gagliano double bass

Whenever we make a direct copy of an historic instrument, we make ‘an heir and a spare’ and build two instruments off the new form. The first of our 1781 Gagliano double bass copies, the heir in this case, is already at work in the New York Philarmonic – but Prince Harry here is ready to go with much less responsibility!

Stunning in its vintage patina tuxedo attire, this newest Upton Gagliano attended the Pittsburgh Double Bass Symposium last weekend where it pulled the assembled bass clef experts into its orbit like Jupiter. Engaging, quick under the bow and with a thunderous, mellow low voice, it’s at once impressive and awesome yet grabbable and approachable. A big bass that’s really fun to play!

Jack has completed the setup with this masterful fully-gated C-extension. Another section-bound instrument, we’re hoping it has a few nights of Hard Bop in its future too.

This is a big bass, nearing Prescott proportions, but check out the tapering gamba-shaped wedge profile, copied directly from the early Italian masterpiece. This rib taper sets it apart from the slab-sided jumbo designs that would evolve from subsequent English versions, and also allows for a little more player closeness and reach over the upper bout.

This 18th Century shape works beautifully with our 21st Century ergonomic approach. We hope you have a chance to play it in our showroom, or speak with Gary about the next build!
