Behold – three amazing available instruments in the Brescian style with shoulders you can hang on. Going back a century in this Italian-via-England (to Mystic!) bloodline, all of these examples move a huge amount of air and are a blast to play.

Neville Whitehead double bass from 1986. Neville has been building basses and cellos near Sydney Australia for over 40 years. Very much an “Italian-masters-via-English-craftsman” style in the legacy of Hawkes, and more recently George and Thomas Martin. Stoutly built, wide upper bout, the build is exquisitely crafted without extra ornament. The quality of the fine flamed Maple back and sides and the precision of the lutherie serve as understated decoration.
A beautiful example of a great early American contrabass from Moses Tewkesbury, one of Abraham Prescott’s longtime luthiers.[gallery ids="132898,132897,132896"]
