Description

A. Batchelder and Son Double Bass, 1875, Pelham, New Hampshire

This Batchelder and Son Double Bass is a beautiful example of an early American instrument from the Prescott school. A first glance at this instrument suggests Prescott, with its shoulder hump and long beautiful ff-holes almost precisely like early smaller Prescotts. It may have even used a Prescott form in its building. Being New England bass builders, we have a fascination with everything from Abraham Prescott, a fascination clearly shared even in his time. The Tewksbury and this Batchelder represent the legacy of the fine builders that passed through the orbit of Abraham Prescott and his sons. In this case, it appears Mr. Batchelder married into the Prescott family, and built this instrument about ten years after Prescott Brothers (their father Abraham had passed away in 1858) had stopped producing string instruments.

This contrabass is in fine shape, having undergone a full restoration in the last couple of decades and service by Arnold Schnitzer. It displays a quick voice, big sound, and sweetness across the registers bowed. The Batchelder exudes orchestral clarity and plenty of jazz punch and growl in a smaller package. Just a prime example of a great New England bass. As with any instrument such as this, the buyer can expect a setup freshened by Upton Bass to suit your preferences and style. Plan to audition at your leisure in our showroom!
