Description

D’Addario Zyex Double Bass Strings are made with a Zyex core that produces a warm, rich tone that doesn’t sound synthetic. Zyex is a new generation of synthetic material that is extremely stable under drastic climatic conditions. Combined with power and clarity for both pizzicato and bowing, D’Addario Zyex Double Bass Strings were developed primarily to offer outstanding pizzicato attacks and sustain. All DAddario strings are designed, engineered, and manufactured in the USA.

Standard sets are scaled to fit a 3/4 size bass with a playing length of 41 3/4 inches (1060mm).  Although the A, D & G strings from this 3/4 set will fit basses with a 42″ string length, the E string will not.  If your string length is OVER 41.75″ OR your after length is long (7″+) you will need to order the 4/4 E string.  Putting a 3/4 E string on an over 41.75″  string length WILL result in the silk coming into the playing area of the string.  Once you wind the string, it is not returnable, so measure twice and order once. 😉

Consequentiality, ordering a LONG string and putting it on a short scale string length will result in a snapped string as the nonflexible portion of the string will break when forced around the peg shaft.

D’Addario Zyex Double Bass Strings are available in two gauges, which allows for good performance across many playing styles. PLEASE MAKE YOUR SELECTION IN THE CUSTOMIZATION TAB ABOVE BEFORE ADDING THE ITEM TO YOUR CART:

  • Light Tension: allows for easier bow response
  • Medium Tension: optimized for a majority of players

Gary’s Thoughts: In a jazz or pizzicato setting, D’Addario Zyex Double Bass Strings are comparable to Thomastik Spirocore, although a touch darker fresh out of the box. Under the bow, the Zyex seem a bit more responsive. A good crossover string for the price and I like that they’re made in America. Medium tension is recommended for most players, but if you are unsure which tension is for you, please contact us.

Highlights:

  • Developed for pizzicato attacks and sustain
  • Great value for a hybrid set
  • Synthetic string with a great dark sound
  • Responsive under the bow

These strings were brought to the attention of the bass class at the 2011 session of Nash Camp by the instuctor – 7-times IBMA bassist of the year Missy Raines.

I have just replaced the Spirocores I was using with a set (medium in both cases) and am quite pleased; not that there was anything wrong with the Spirocores – they were great- but I like these even better. The main difference, as the advertising notes, is these strings sound and feel more \”gut-like\”. They have a bit less tension than the Spirocores, plus more depth and a bit more fullness in the D & G strings. They also seem to have more \”growl\”, for lack of a better word. I guess I should also mention that they sound better when bowed which, I admit, I do very little.
