Virgilio Calini double bass, Napoca, Romania 2004
This Virgilio Calini double bass features prime flamed maple back and sides and an elegant violin cornered pattern. Striking ornate carving adorn the unique scroll. The fully-gated C-extension is made by Chris Threlkeld-Wiegand.
Napoca, a city in northwestern Romania, is the unofficial capital of the Transylvania region, and home to many violinmakers. The city has strong Roman ties historically as Romania was a Roman conquest.
There is some internet writing alluding to Virgilio Calini being a Cremonese trained luthier by the name of Vittorio Callini working with extraordinary woods from Romania’s Karpaten Region.
