Description

The Fishman Platinum Pro EQ Double Bass Preamp:

We’ve been looking forward to this new Fishman preamp here in the shop, and it looks as if it will not disappoint. Jack has grabbed the first one and will report back from the dark underbelly of New England nightclubs, where it hopefully won’t be stolen immediately. At first glance, the thing is gorgeous and built like a tank, with heavy-duty switches leaning it towards use as a stompbox. We were very pleased to find such an excellent tuner incorporated – foot-switchable!  We’ll offer a complete review and video after a little more use…check back to see it!

The Fishman Platinum Pro EQ Double Bass Preamp delivers incredibly accurate, all-analog, sonic detail for your double bass. A discrete, high-headroom Class-A preamp uses precision, high-speed circuitry for the highest fidelity and low distortion. Classic Fishman tone centers with sweepable mid are combined with a switchable guitar/bass EQ mode, making it more musical for bass instruments and more universal for recording and performing musicians. The Platinum Pro EQ integrates critical performance features like an adjustable volume boost and a balanced XLR D.I. output housed in a beautiful, road-ready design. The Platinum Pro EQ is built to be stomped on with durable foot switches that activate the adjustable volume boost or high-contrast chromatic tuner. It also includes a simple and effective analog soft-knee compressor, effect loop, and precision sweepable notch filter.

I’m using this pre-amp as a replacement for a SansAmp/Tech21 Acoustic Transducer I left backstage at a gig 🙁 I got it for free, so I had nothing to lose–why not at least try it out? Now I wish I’d picked one up a long time ago–it’s now my preamp-of-choice. The Pro-EQ offers a wide range of settings enabling you to use it with a variety of pickups, through an amp or direct into a PA–or both. The compression is perfect for bass as it doesn’t flatten things out too much. The bass/low fequency controls let you determine how low you want to extend the bass frequencies, and how loud you want them. It’s a warm preamp like the SansAmp/Tech21 Acoustic Transducer, but offers MUCH more control over your tone. I’m using it with a Fishman Full Circle preamp (also given to me for free as an endorsee) on my carved bass, and with an Underwood on my American Standard. Those pickups and basses are very different, but I feel the Fishman Pro-EQ handles both applications extremely well. Negatives? It’s a bulky, odd shaped, ugly box. It must have been designed by a aerospace engineer as I believe it would probably survive drops and being stepped on as well as a heated reentry into the earth’s atmosphere…
