Gemunder Double Bass Restoration Project

-

This 19th Century Gemunder double bass restoration candidate is an American masterpiece in the rough.

This vintage bass deserves a proper neck graft and old patches attended to, but is very intact with original details throughout.  We are very excited to hear and play this fine instrument when fully restored for its next owner!

Description

Gemunder Double Bass Restoration Project

This is Gemunder double bass restoration candidate is pretty exciting. What might be passed by as a mild-mannered German instrument is actually an American masterpiece in the rough. We believe this is an August Gemunder dating to mid-late 1800s. The Gemunder family has origins in Austria, the elder George worked in France in Vuillaume’s shop before moving to the United States in the mid-1800s. Generations of Gemunders would build instruments in Springfield, Massachusetts and later New York.

The victim of many well-meaning repairs, this vintage Gemunder double bass deserves a proper neck graft with modern projection and overstand. Original scroll and tuners with plates intact. The top seems to be pretty healthy from the outside. Many patches and flaws need to be addressed, and varnish matched. It has a beautiful classic shape, very long lyrical ff-holes, and detailed outside rib linings exhibiting the craftsman’s skill. We are very excited to see this instrument, even more, to play and hear it, fully buttoned up with a new slab of ebony and complete Upton setup!  See Eric’s “walk and talk” video below highlighting the details.
