Description

Sold: Mirecourt Double Bass, Late 19th Century French Guild Contrebasse

This Mirecourt Double Bass could be a little older than some of the 1890s examples we’ve seen. A longer well proportioned 3/4 size with rounded gamba bouts – what a nice French bass! Lots of patina and presence, very original and well maintained.

Round back gamba with back and sides of European Beech, and quartersawn European Spruce top. The long original scroll has just had a thorough restoration here at Upton Bass including a new C-Extension. Long provenance includes care in Arnold Schnitzer’s workshop and a recent appraisal. A very special orchestral instrument or jazz presence.

Measurements:

  • Upper Bout 19.7” (500mm)
  • C Bout 14.4” (365mm)
  • Lower Bout 25.4” (646mm)
  • Body Length 44” (1118mm)
  • String Length: 42”
  • Rib Depth 6.25 – 7.75” (159-198mm)
