Description

Donald Gorman Double Bass 2007, New Brunswick, Canada

Another unique Donald Gorman double bass has come to the red barn! As with every Gorman we’ve seen, this larger bass showcases his fine wood choices with plentiful light, resonant tiger flame maple.

No two Gormans are alike, and this Canadian bassist-turned-luthier likes it that way: “They are separate entities, not production items. What I love is the thought that in 200 years these basses will be in the hands of someone making beautiful music. I feel I am taking my place in an ancient tradition. You build the instrument and it builds you. Everything begins to fit.”

The neck block has a square French block motif and slight taper to the heel. Nicely arched top with a large bass bin, this bass measures nine inches rib depth from the back cant on down. It really moves air – especially under the bow, great for orchestral and chamber use. If your style of music calls for a big bass, this instrument glows with strength and charm.
