Description

SOLD: Ernst Reinholdt Schmidt Double Bass, circa 1920, Saxony, ex-Dave Holland

This early 20th Century E.R. Reinholdt Schmidt double bass has been in the hands of some of the greatest jazz bass players out there for decades. Dave Holland gigged and recorded with it extensively in the ’80s and ’90s and it has always been played, professionally maintained, and meticulously cared for. Great mojo with many more stories to tell!

Notably is the instrument used on the Dave Holland double bass solo album “Ones All”. Also owned by Mike Rivard and used on many recordings. An excellent instrument with remarkable resonance, clarity, and punch. Clear provenance.

The top plate is made of two pieces of book-matched, quarter-sawn, straight-grained spruce, and is cut with gamba corners. The edges of the top and back are slightly raised. The purfling is narrow and made of three pieces. The bass bar of the top is original and is made of spruce. Deep chestnut varnish with antiquing typical of Saxon violinmakers. Round back, consisting of two pieces of nicely flamed, book-matched maple. The ribs are made of maple. All of the interior blocks and linings are made of spruce. The neck is original and made of maple with an ebony fingerboard. Both back and top plates have a defined recurve towards the narrower purfling.
