SOLD: FA Homolka Czech Double Bass

Description

This Double Bass c1850 is labelled “Ferdinand A. Homolka.” Homolka was from the famous violin-makers family that came from Velvary in the Czech Republic. Together with his brother, Emanuel Adam Homolka, he constructed many fine instruments in Prague according to the models of Stradivari, J. Guarneri and N. Amati. Homolka was known for various personal designs, although his renditions of the legendary Italian classics were prized for their quality of tone. Lütgendorff, a well known violin connoisseur described Homolka as the “Prague Stradivari.” Many of Homolka’s instruments bear intricate details and deep red or golden-toned varnish.

This Homolka Double Bass features a simple gamba pattern that is similar to the Bohemian-styled basses imported to the US by John Juzek (1920-1970’s). This double bass recently underwent a restoration and had a custom-made ebony C-Extension installed by the Upton Bass luthiers. Upton Bass C-Extensions are non-invasive: we do not cut nor drill into the scroll as many other luthiers do. Our non-invasive C-Extension preserves both the original appearance and value of a vintage instrument.
