Santagiuliana Upton Double Bass

Santagiuliana Upton Double Bass

This beautiful Venetian pattern boasts large dimensions all around and is the perfect large concert bass for a storied concert hall.

The Santagiuliana double bass project began when Blake Hinson from the NY Philarmonic contacted us about copying his beloved Giacinto Santagiuliana dating to the early 19th Century.

Gary and Blake Hinson talk Santagiuliana and Gagliano in this revealing shop talk!

Gary comments: “Well, I might say this is one of the most special builds of our high end basses to date. Did you know – when we copy an old Italian bass we begin by making first a hybrid model, as a proof of concept. Then we pull out the greatest materials and lay it ALL out there. Here’s our take on an amazing Giacinto Santagiuliana who lived a rich life from 1781 to 1853 in Vicenza of Northern Italy.”

Here’s Blake’s fully-carved version:

Some of the last plates of our astounding great log of spalted Maple went into these Santagiulianas, passing the torch from some of our greatest instruments to the next-level basses of the future.
