A Report From Build Bass

Exciting things are happening at Build Bass. Our first group of students is nearing completion on their basses, and we’re proud to see the progress they’ve made. Over the past weeks and months, they have learned, problem-solved, and honed their craftsmanship, turning raw materials into beautiful, playable instruments. We got photos from Jon in Austin, TX, and his bass is now very close to ready.

Each student has faced their own challenges, from working in small spaces to tackling woodworking techniques for the first time. Through determination and with support in weekly calls and nearly instant feedback in the Facebook group, they have navigated these obstacles to get their instruments gig-ready.

Tiago recently brought his finished bass to band practice. Hearing it in action was a real high-five moment for all of us. It sounds and looks great, and the fact that he built it in a one-bedroom apartment in New York City makes it all the more remarkable.

As our students continue refining their instruments, we are also evolving. Their feedback has been invaluable, allowing us to tweak the process and improve the experience for future builders. The spirit of Build Bass is all about exploration, growth, and pushing creative boundaries. Our students have really shown up for that.

And speaking of showing up – Forrest came to visit the shop, to have his Upton double bass adjusted, and to solve a building problem in person.

This program can be done from anywhere. There are around 90 videos showing all the details of the craftsmanship that goes into making a bass. Equally important is the instant feedback in our Facebook group, and our weekly Zoom meetings. And not least, the mutual support and communal problem-solving between peers in the group. We have students all over the country with varying degrees of experience and access to tools, and it’s really exciting to see how everyone is using their skills and problem solving to reach the goal, no matter where they started.

What Dan and Gary have to say:

We’re looking forward to seeing and hearing more of these basses in action!
