In the double bass world, the term “Bohemian” refers to the instrument building tradition in the western Czech region surrounding Prague – the source of classic contrabasses by such names as Juzek, Prokop, Bittner, and Lutz. In the general sense, Bohemian refers to the artistic wanderer; restless and adventurous, unburdened by extravagance. The Upton Bohemian upright bass combines these two notions – renowned quality and frugal sensibility – resulting in a flexible, reliable instrument ideal for a broad range of musicians.
The Bohemian is not about excess. With its simple lines, Gamba-style cornered and deep booming tone, its form is defined by purpose without ornament. Hand-built, with the same ergonomics and playability found in all of our models, the Bohemian upright bass is being offered in four levels of build styles and price points, each carefully designed to meet the unique requirements of its owner:
The Bohemian Laminated Double Bass from $3,250
We know a quality plywood upright bass has an important place, whether it lives in the van hitting summer stages or stays at the theater projecting every night from the pit – loud, tough, and easy to live with. This bass includes a laminated flat-back- the toughest, most durable back out there (without adding too much girth or weight) that really packs a nice focused punch.
The Bohemian Hybrid Double Bass from $4,250
The same design fundamentals are carried over into the Hybrid version, built with a hand-carved European spruce top with inlaid purfling and slab-cut laminations of domestic poplar on the back and sides (flatback bass). Strong enough for the rigors of everyday use, with the tone, depth, and resonance of a carved top. Upgrade to a Deluxe Top (a $1,000 upgrade) and you have an outstanding modern contrabass with great flexibility, from the string section to the bandstand.
The Bohemian Solid Wood Flat Back Double Bass from $6,000
The Bohemian Carved Round Back Double Bass from $7,500
Deluxe tops come standard on these special builds, designed for optimum tone and great range while retaining the working design aesthetic. These exceptionally responsive instruments feature warmth, projection, and clarity. A fine selection of tonewood is also available for truly unique instruments.
Pricing reflects the base instrument price – choice of strings, bridge adjusters, bags, and accessories are additional. This model is offered in 5/8 (+$250), 3/4 (standard), or 7/8 sizing(+$250)!
