The first of our 1781 Gagliano double bass copies is already at work in the New York Philarmonic.
The second Upton Gagliano attended the Pittsburgh Double Bass Symposium where it pulled the assembled bass clef experts into its orbit like Jupiter. Engaging, quick under the bow and with a thunderous, mellow low voice, it’s at once impressive and awesome yet grabbable and approachable. A big bass that’s really fun to play!
This is a big bass, nearing Prescott proportions, but check out the tapering gamba-shaped wedge profile, copied directly from the early Italian masterpiece. This rib taper sets it apart from the slab-sided jumbo designs that would evolve from subsequent English versions, and also allows for a little more player closeness and reach over the upper bout.
This 18th Century shape works beautifully with our 21st Century ergonomic approach. Speak with Gary about the next build!
