The 5/8 Upton Bass Bohemian double bass is a truly professional instrument in a smaller size, where many other builders only offer student grade models. It is a precisely scaled down version of our tried and true 3/4 Bohemian model.
In the double bass world, the term “Bohemian” refers to the instrument building tradition in the western Czech region surrounding Prague – the source of classic contrabasses by such names as Juzek, Prokop, Bittner, and Lutz. The Upton Bohemian upright bass is a flexible, reliable instrument suitable for a broad range of musicians. The Bohemian is not about excess. Its form is defined by purpose. Hand-built, with the same ergonomics and playability found in all of our models.
As with all Upton Basses The 5/8 Bohemian Upton Bass is available in three build styles, with a full array of add-on and upgrade items to choose from, such as our patented removable/adjustable neck, C-extension and dot inlays:
Hybrid Flat Back, starting at $8500
Solid Wood Flat Back, starting at $10,000
Solid Wood Round Back, starting at $13000
Talk with Gary Upton about a unique build. One of his favorite projects is to customize a model like the Bohemian with select woods and build something special on one of our most classic models. The Bohemian is typically a gamba cornered bass, but we also make a version with elegant violin corners. Pricing reflects the base instrument price – choice of strings, bridge adjusters, bags, and accessories are additional. As with all Uptons, we invite you to consult with us on exactly what we can do to make an upright bass that is truly yours.
