Description
The Gallien-Krueger MB150S-112 MicroBass Combo Amp: You’ll marvel that an amp as small as this can sound so great. 150W RMS combo with a heavy-duty 12″ speaker and a host of pro features packed into a rugged, all-metal cab that weighs only 24 lbs. and fits into an overhead luggage compartment. Perfect for small gigs, rehearsals, or studio. Or mount on a stand as a personal monitor and use direct outs to feed PA or recording. For larger stage performances, switch off the internal speaker, plug into 2 – 8-ohm cabs, and you’re ready to rock. Features a 4-band EQ and a user-activated limiter to eliminate distortion. The Gallien-Krueger MB150 has been a longtime favorite for bassists such as Charlie Haden and Ron Carter.
Gary’s Thoughts: This little amp is a real tank. A good double bass amplifier that works for “doublers” because it also fits the bill for lower volume electric bass needs. The MB150 works well with the Rev Solo pickup and other double bass pickups (each offering their own tonal characteristics). To get more specific tonal shaping capabilities from the amp and help decrease the likelihood of feedback, consider the Fishman Platinum Pro EQ Preamplifier or the new Fishman Platinum Stage. If you are searching for a more transparent sound, try the Acoustic Image Contra Double Bass Amp. Want to know more? I’ve included a demo on the MB150 in the YouTube video below.

Although I know a couple of bassists who have been happy with this amp (older versions) but I have been disappointed. I ordered one through Upton and received it June 2017. It worked great and sounded great with my upright until November 2019 when it started making loud crackling noise and is currently unusable. The amp was stored in my house and only used when I very occasionally had an upright gig. It was out of warranty 5 months before it started having problems. I have a couple of cheaper (non GK) amps that get used daily, and although the sound with my upright is not as good, I don’t have to worry that they will misbehave on a gig. I may have just got a lemon.
