German Double Bass, early 1900s, Markneukirchen

-

Large presence and original detail on this lively vintage German double bass. Markings suggest a Sears catalog-order double bass from Markneukirchen, Germany, 1900-1920. Well sorted to audition at the shop or gig tonight!

Description

Very cool vintage German double bass – an American catalog import from the early 20th Century. Fairly large proportions in this stout gamba pattern, very tightly flamed maple in the original neck and scroll. It has seen its share of scuffs and repairs but we’ve maintained it for years and have addressed current cracks and structural issues. Clean bill of health, ready to have the setup tweaked to your playing style.

The imprints “Concert Basso – Stradivarius” are telltales – Sears used “Stradivarius” as a string instrument a brand name dating from the 1890s well into the 20th Century (many violins with this trademark are excitedly being found in attics every day). The Markneukirchen region of Germany (Wilfer, Rubner and many others) was the leading manufacturer for these basses in the pre-World War era. Millions of string instruments were exported from the town of Markneukirchen, Germany, alone between 1880 and 1914.
