Italian School Double Bass

-

This double bass bears a Guadagnini label, though we are not representing it as an authentic Guadagnini. That said, the scroll and remaining original varnish clearly reflect Italian craftsmanship, and the instrument has a beautiful patina, despite previous varnish removal on the body.

The instrument is attributed to the Milanese School, circa 1875–1900. It features structural traits and m
consistent with late 19th-century Northern Italian luthiery, including a rare eight-piece spruce top joined with chevron pieces, deeply inlaid hand-cut purfling, and an original scroll. The facsimile label of Joannes Baptista Guadagnini is a nod to its lineage, but the instrument stands on its own merit through craftsmanship and performance.

Description

The top is constructed from eight pieces of fine-grain spruce, bookmatched with chevron joins at both the upper and lower ends.
This technique, a hallmark of resource-conscious Italian workshops, is executed with precision and visual harmony.
Tool marks and knife work across the interior confirm traditional handwork, not factory tooling.
The purfling is deeply inlaid and carved by hand, hugging the outline with asymmetry indicative of artistic individuality.

The scroll is original and bears multiple signs of its age and use, including filled tuner holes and oxidized wear.
The two-piece maple back and solid wood ribs are fully lined with new blocks fitted during restoration.
The F-holes are traditionally Italian in style – elongated with deeply scooped fluting and visible knife work around the eyes

RESTORATION
This bass is being restored by Upton Bass, receiving a full interior rebuild with new blocks, linings, bass bar, and cleats.
All work is performed to museum-level standards, preserving structural integrity and tonal balance while respecting
the historic nature of the instrument.
