Kay S-51 5 String Bass Viol Restoration

$5,000.00

-

The Five string Kay S-51 Bass Viol is a rare and historically significant instrument, produced by Kay Musical Instrument Company in the mid-20th century.

Kay basses were built in Chicago, Illinois, with the company operating from 1931 to 1969.
Our S-51 was built in 1939 (serial number 6334)

Description

The S-51 is a three-quarter-sized bass designed for school and student use.
Compared to the M-1 or C-1 models, the S-51 is much harder to find today.

While the S-51 was built as a student model, it still has the classic “Kay tone” and can hold its own.

Our S-51 will receive a neck graft and new fingerboard, and be fully gone over. Fully restored it will sell for $5,000.
