Not For Sale: Moses A. Tewkesbury Double Bass, 1844, Chester, New Hampshire

-

A beautiful example of a great early American contrabass from Moses Tewkesbury, one of Abraham Prescott’s longtime luthiers.

Description

This full sized Moses A. Tewkesbury double bass is a well-restored example with enormous presence. Tewkesbury was an apprentice and builder in Abraham Prescott’s shop. Many features of this early American contrabass scream “Prescott,” from the scroll to the uncut ff-holes, the hump at the neck heel – arching, measurements, even the sugar maple used for the back. This instrument is clearly akin to the ex-Leslie “Tiny” Martin (BSO) Prescott double bass we also have in our shop. In fact, compared side-by-side with the Tiny Martin Prescott of the same era, the back and sides could have been made from the same tree. There are a small selection of Moses Tewkesbury string instruments out there, but he had his hand in the building of many Prescotts.

The well-preserved 1844 label identifies it as originating in Chester, N.H., thirty miles from Prescott’s Concord locale. While Abraham Prescott expanded his company building melodions and pedal organs, one of his finest contrabass craftsmen struck out on his own and continued in the Prescott style.
