SALE PENDING: Abraham Prescott Double Bass c1830, New Hampshire
Beautiful, well-maintained, and played example of the prized Prescott Busetto-cornered contrabass. A previous owner dated to 1823, that could be a little early, but it certainly represents the “golden era” of Prescott double basses as he and the Dearborn brothers moved into regular production in Deerfield and Concord, New Hampshire.
This is one of the finest examples we’ve seen. All of the iconic Prescott bass details are intact – Busetto corners, bee-stinger brass plates, and connected ff-holes. These special basses don’t come up for sale very often and are rarely such vibrant musical instruments.
This Prescott double bass was long owned and brilliantly played by Jeff Weisner of the National Symphony Orchestra. He had it fully restored in 1988 by Robert Daugherty and the extension was added in 1999 by Mario LaMarre. Weisner says of this Prescott, “It’s a truly special instrument and one of the finest American basses that I’ve ever seen. Huge, resonant tone with a special depth and power in the lower range. For a bass of this size, it is extremely well set up and very easy to play, even in the upper register. I’ve played many solos and concertos on it with very good results.”
Two-piece canted back of quilted/birdseye maple. Very healthy with a history of expert repairs, fully-gated ebony C-extension. Available for audition at our workshop – call Eric for more info: +1 (860) 535-9399.
