Description
Andreas Morelli labelled double bass circa 1900-1920s, fully carved “Artist Deluxe” model refreshed by Upton Bass.
This acoustic bass bears hallmarks of possibly German or Czech importer label instruments from the beginning of the 20th Century. The quality and old-growth wood choices are excellent and the arching and elegant shape make it stand out from similar basses. This century-old instrument really comes alive under the bow. It has a long design with large lower bout but feels comfortable and natural to play. Very nice character of sound in this vintage double bass, would make an excellent section or chamber instrument.
Some workshop notes: “This Morelli bass came in as a poorly done 5’er…so we brought it back to its tasteful self. The pegbox had been overly drilled out and had badly done plates that hung off the edges. We bushed the holes, laid out new tuners and modernized the layout. We crafted custom plates and antiqued everything to have the right look with the wear of the bass.
The fingerboard was dressed and the awkward overhang someone glued on was removed and sanded to perfection. All new setup items were used. The bass itself is in fantastic shape showing signs of lots of love and use…someone played this bass a LOT. No known history of the neck repairs, but it is solidly done and ready to gig.”
