SOLD: Corey Swan Ceruti Model Double Bass 2012

-

This 2012 Corey Swan “Ceruti” Model Double Bass was constructed with the original 1820 Ceruti by its side. The bass is a 7/8 model and has a 42” string length. Like the original, the top is carved from the finest Italian spruce, although Corey also used his personal life experiences as inspiration while constructing this double bass. The back and sides are made of aspen, a form of poplar, which is abundant in Colorado where he grew up. The neck is European maple and is topped with a Butternut scroll. The original Ceruti scroll was carved of walnut, but Corey chose a similar colored wood within the same species that is local to New England, where his workshop is based.

Corey Swan is a Bass and Violin maker currently working in Providence, RI. He is a formally trained double bassist with equal amounts of training and experience in the Italian instrument making tradition, working from the perspective of both a player and luthier. Corey’s methods bring the precision of violin making to the double bass world.

Description

The Ceruti Model by Corey Swan is an immaculate copy of an 1820 double bass by a Cremonese master.

Corey Swan’s Thoughts: “Completed in 2012, this bass was a very fun project because I was able to make it side by side with the original that was being restored at the time. Having the original so close allowed me to capture the character of the 1820 Ceruti. Every time I had a question in the building process, it was like having the Cremonese master right there by my side telling me what he would do.”

Gary’s Thoughts: Upton Bass is proud to represent this contemporary American bass maker, to work closely with him, and offer this instrument for sale. Corey’s craftstmanship and skill is apparent in his work. When bowed, the tone of this double bass is clear, present, and even. When plucked, this instrument packs a punch with a “big bass” sound. I wouldn’t actually say it’s a big bass; in fact, it’s very accessible and playable.
