Jean Auray Double Bass 2007, Villefranche sur Saône, France
This lovely instrument is an example of Jean Auray’s 3/4 size Charlie Haden Model, violin cornered, with Mr. Auray’s removable travel neck. His basses have been favored by players such as Mr. Haden, Michael Formanek, Stanley Clarke and can be found in orchestras across Europe.
Jean Auray has a small workshop in the Rhone region of France, and describes his instruments as “combining the structural qualities and fine balance of French instruments with the elegant style of the Italian.”
This elegant double bass seems to fulfill that lofty ideal. Superb wood choices: heavily flamed maple back and sides and spruce top with rare “hazel fichte” or “bear claw” beauty marks. Luthier details include lovely carved button, fine carved detail on the scroll and impeccable purfling.
Exceptional bass with great clarity of tone. The neck is clean and super fast, very nice setup. This is a serious bass and a modern classic.
