Description
Kai Arvi Double Bass 1982. An early example from this Italian-inspired stalwart string instrument builder. Kai Arvi learned his craft of double bass building at the side of his father, Vilho Arvi.
The last Vilho Arvi-labeled basses are from 1980, so this was built early in the handoff to Kai’s assuming the Finnish family’s musical instrument-building business. This double bass was built using the same forms Vilho Arvi developed to make a an Italian-style instrument with great access to the upper register. Slim upper shoulders and long c-bouts allow for exceptional access with the bow. This particular example has a warm, even character perfect for orchestral or chamber music.
Kai Arvi now builds basses in Canada, along the design as this instrument. Here’s some more info on the Arvi legacy from his site:
“In 1980, we built the last two basses with Vilho’s label in them. In his lifetime, which ended in 1997, Vilho built 229 instruments, which included approximately 70 basses and the rest violas, violins, and cellos. I have continued building the Arvi bass using the same form my father left me, my first bass still being played by the principal bass in the Vermont Symphony. For over 31 years I have concentrated on refining the tonal quality, playability, and cosmetic finish of the bass. I have made 135 basses to date with 2 violins and 1 cello.”
