Description
1941 Kay Double Bass, M-1 Model Bass Viol, Serial 7940. Here’s a well cared for early Kay with violin corners and nice original sunburst.
This American classic plywood upright bass has the vintage mojo Kay enthusiasts prize. Has had work done but very original. Even has the old Kay emblem on the tailpiece.
Serial number puts it in early 1941 production according to widely circulated Kay double bass production lists. Scrapes and dings, looks the part of an 80-year old jazz and roots workhorse. Replacement neck and fingerboard, looks to be Engelhardt, work was probably done in the 80’s based on wear. Varnish was touched up to make it match.
These never stick around for long and most of these early M1s are on their 9th life. Nice to see this one so healthy.
