Description
Mittenwald Double Bass Mid 20th Century
This Mittenwald double bass is a 3/4 size fully-carved violin-cornered workhorse. Flamed maple back and sides, old-growth German spruce top, fine construction and a well-weathered patina.
Well played and very comfortable to play. This upright bass demonstrates the remarkable resonance of an instrument that has been played more nights than not. Bryan, our in-house bass test-driver, loves this bass and compares it to warm wool socks in the winter: “Big sound. Really punches you in the gut with every note. Fantastic sustain and snarl. The bass was owned by a pro and it got used all the time! The wood is alive with all the stories of gigs it’s played. Unfortunately, it also shows the wear. There have been a number of repairs of minor cracks and seams opening up over the years that will likely open again. Once again, all minor. I would absolutely take this one out and gig with it anytime.”
A great reminder, as fussy and “imperfect” as vintage instruments can be, the payoff can be huge in sound and tone. This old Mittenwald double bass has acquired an amazing voice over the years and deserves not to be overlooked. Ready to be set up to your liking or gig’d “as is”!
