Description
Shown here is a Kimmel “Milanese” fully carved double bass, from
Eugene, Oregon – Upton Bass is happy to offer Seth Kimmel’s unique
creations on the East Coast. This instrument is built to
his Milanese pattern with long, elegant C bouts. The top is of
Willamette Valley Ponderosa Pine, with striking corduroy grain. The
back, ribs and neck are made of Black Walnut from Salem, Oregon,
featuring deep flame on the back and ribs. Purfling and handworked
details are artfully finished and very pleasing in shape and form.
Completed with antiqued Sloane tuners and a fine adjustable bridge.
Gary met Seth at last year’s ISB show and appreciated the flair and
style of his instruments. This particular Kimmel bass, completed in
March
2011, was Gary’s favorite. He adds, “No vanilla here!”
Tone notes: a very focused sound, extremely clear with the bow,
with a singing cello quality. Pizzicato: a defined woody “snap,” strong
front end with mids and lower range that follow through. Rich mids and
lows without being too boomy.
