Description
Soriot et Fils Double Bass, Late 19th Century, Mirecourt, France
This Soriot et Fils double bass is a beautiful, healthy example of 19th Century Mirecourt style. It exudes character, built with cello-style shoulders and a choice piece of maple that runs one-piece through the upper bout of the back. Estimated “late 19th Century” but the pattern suggests the early side of that – Soriot et Fils (Soriot and Son) was established in Mirecourt as early as 1849.
Well maintained and orchestrally played, this vintage contrabass has a deep gloss varnish and nicely done C-extension with one gate. The shape makes it a little ungainly to get over the top, but very comfortable to navigate when seated. Jazz players should not flinch though, many musicians (Carlos Henriquez!) favor broad-shouldered French contrabasses. This instrument really comes alive under the bow, we were recently treated to a teacher and high-level students filling the entire bass shop with its deep, singing tone.
Spruce top, one-piece maple round back (small wings on the lower bout). Faint curls run upward from left to right. The original scroll has been grafted, and with a 39.5″ string length, smaller statured double bassists who demand orchestral level tone should take note! Original tuners remain. The dark red-brown varnish has a deep gloss polish. Plays beautifully and emanates character and warmth.
