Description
Wilfer Double Bass Germany – Early 20th Century. Beautiful violin-cornered example with old-growth flame maple.
A German Wilfer built for the US market consistent with early 20th Century basses, the original label has been removed and there’s a note from the Connecticut restorer, John Shurley, dating to 1946. That must be the restoration date, German violinmaking wouldn’t really return until the 1950s (restarted in large part by Fred Wilfer incidentally, who used a US Army truck and uniform to move three loads of prized hardwood from the chaotic Sudetenland into a safer German region! Strings)
We assume this lovely instrument was built in the 1930s. It is rare to find a violin-cornered Wilfer double bass with such character and premium flame wood choices. Deeply arched with a compact design and light as a feather, the back and ribs ripple with gorgeous maple. A true pearl, easily overlooked.
