This project was inspired by the tradition of contrabass building established in the city of Venice. The instruments of this style, such as those of Domenico Busan, Domenico Montagnana & Matteo Goffriller are dramatically characterized by their elegant proportions, violin corners and sonorous tone. Venetian basses are very much “violinmaker” basses and have a graceful style to them.
This instrument was specially built for a woman who needed a smaller pattern with great definition for chamber music. The solid sycamore back and sides, coupled with the soft European spruce top worked very well with this smaller bodied design, giving it a full orchestral tone with evenness and clarity.
