Hybrid Cello
From $6,000Â
The Hybrid Upton Cello features back and sides of premium tonewood laminate and a European Spruce top. With the stable laminated back and sides, hybrid instruments are more durable and easy to live with than fully carved instruments. Our unique laminates are made by hand in the Upton Bass workshop of tonewood veneers. They provide excellent durability and stability for musicians and students in a wide variety of conditions. This example features a dark amber hand rubbed varnish.
Hybrids make an excellent choice for students, with plenty of volume and the tone from the hand-carved resonant top. Many pros keep one in their quiver for outdoor concerts or travel.
Our 4/4 cello is patterned on a larger historic Montegnana instrument. All of our hybrid cellos are built from the finest laminates and seasoned wood stock and hand built over an interior frame in the Italian method.
Why is a world renowned and internationally awarded double bass maker building cellos?
The cello and the double bass share such common musical ground. Just name a classical bassist that hasn’t worked on the Bach Cello Suites. The second lowest string of the cello is literally that of the double basses highest string, and the cellos lowest string (C) drills down into the first position of a double bass players A string. Upton Bass has spent years perfecting the balance, clarity, and presence of these string frequencies and how they react with the player and the instrument. It’s very exciting to apply our knowledge to the beautiful tonal palette of the cello.
Upton Cellos are made entirely by hand in our Mystic, Connecticut workshop, conveniently located between NYC and Boston, minutes off of Interstate 95.
