As 2024 comes to a close, we at Upton Bass have been reflecting on what has been an incredible year for our team and our community. From new projects to exciting collaborations, this year has been a great one. Here are some highlights that made 2024 special.
Collaborations and Craftsmanship
We’ve had the honor of working with esteemed musicians and luthiers throughout the year. Highlights include refining our manufacturing process in collaboration with a master luthier. We have created bespoke instruments for top level musicians, such as the Gagliano copy for Blake Hinson, and the two copies of Max Zeugner’s Cassini – identical with the exception of one being a round back, one a flat back. They answered many of the questions we’ve had about the differences between the two. We’re also exploring the world of tuning in fifths with Joel Quarrington, who visited from Canada and gave a very special performance in the Bass Barn.
Pioneering Amplification and Rosin
Another leap forward has been the development of our down-firing, 10-inch solid-state amp. Set for release in 2025, this amp aims to fill a tonal gap left by the unfortunate passing of a legendary double bass amp maker. The early feedback has been phenomenal, and we’re excited to share it with you soon.
Additionally, we’ve ventured into making rosin—Gary is literally making it in the basement of his home. Our Maple, Maple + , and Honey formulations are addressing gaps in the market and we are excited by the positive reviews.
A Special Achievement
A heartfelt congratulations to Antonia Aviles, who published Catalina Plays the Double Bass, an educational book about the instrument we all love. It’s been warmly received, earning awards and accolades, and helping to introduce both children and adults to the world of double bass. We joined Antonia on readings in Harlem.
An Educational Milestone: BuildBass.com
This year also saw the launch of BuildBass.com, our educational platform teaching the craft of building electric basses. We are currently working with our first cohort, and are thrilled to see their progress and excited to take it further. Our vision is to expand it to include advanced levels of luthiery, culminating in the ability to build a double bass.
Stringing Innovation into the Future
One of our most exciting developments has been the arrival of string-winding machines. It’s a project that has been years in the making, and we’ve been experimenting with prototypes, testing, breaking, and refining many designs. Although not ready for release yet, the process has been a total bass geek fest for us. These innovations represent a new frontier for Upton Bass, and we’re proud to push the boundaries of what’s possible.
Celebrating Community and Feedback
What drives us most is knowing our instruments are out in the world, making music. From stages to studios, we’re grateful for every bassist who chooses Upton Bass. Hearing feedback—whether it’s glowing praise or constructive criticism—fuels our passion for continual improvement.
Looking Ahead to 2025
As we gear up for 2025, we’re excited to bring you more. We’re grateful for a year filled with creativity, collaboration, and the joy of making music. Thank you for being part of the journey. Here’s to an even brighter 2025!
Stay connected with us on social media and through our website for updates, and don’t hesitate to reach out with your feedback—it’s what makes us better.
