Description

Hungarian Double Bass, circa 1975

This large Hungarian double bass is 7/8ths size with distinctive northern European styling. It’s similar to a Dutch instrument we’ve seen from the same era with the thick gamba shape evoking Tyrolean instruments. Well built, unlabelled – big 46″ four-piece canted back with tightly flamed maple, C-extension, restored in 2008.

This bass has about the craziest long scroll we’ve ever seen – it measured 17″ from the top to bottom ducktail! Flame carving on the lower bouts continues over the endpin block. A truly unique instrument with a huge sonic presence, the orchestra played and was well maintained.

Measurements:

  • Upper Bout: 22″
  • C Bout: 17″
  • Lower Bout: 26.5″
  • Length of Back/Front: 46″
  • Rib Depth: 9″ to cant, 6.75″ at neck set
  • String Length: 42″
  • Length of Scroll: 17″ (we had to check)
