Upton Bass Brescian Double Bass 2012 Copenhagen Award Winner
On the 17th of August, 2012, we entered a solid wood flat-back Brescian model Upton Double Bass into the European Society of Bassists Bass Makers Competition, held at their bi-annual convention in Copenhagen. The Upton Bass Brescian Double Bass 2012 Copenhagen Award Winner won first place for tone from the playing jury!
The Upton Bass Brescian Double Bass was conceived in February of 2012, with the first one debuting at the Pittsburgh Double Bass Symposium. The first hybrid model was a success but still needed refinement. Many subtle changes were made over the next few models and by June we were locked in to what the Brescian model ideally was. Around this time Upton Bass was in the final planning stages of the upcoming European Society of Bassists convention to be held in Copenhagen. We were elated to find that the bass makers completion would be a “blind” event (basses played behind a curtain so you could not see the bass you were judging)…and more so that a team of makers could enter a single instrument. So Gary & Eric began the Upton Bass Brescian Double Bass 2012 Copenhagen Award Winner as a team effort.
The bass has a wonderfully rich tone that is loud and clear with a powerful low end that does not fall apart or get nasal into thumb position.
