If you’ve been in the market for smaller bass, you might have noticed that the options for quality instruments are a bit limited. The double bass world tends to equate “small” with “student”. We are changing that. While in some circumstances there might be no substitute for cubic inches, a 4/4 Prescott is not for everyone. Perhaps ease of travel is a priority of yours, or you need the ergonomics of a smaller bass.
Our goal is to maximize what you can get out of a 5/8 double bass.
We recently finished a 5/8 version of our trusty, gamba cornered Bohemian model. While previous small basses have been custom interpretations of our patterns, this one is a true scaling of the 3/4 version, 5% down. The result is a smaller bass that punches way above its size. The first one will soon be in the hands of a great jazz bassist, and we are very excited to send it out in the world and hear what it’s capable of.
We also just started developing a violin cornered version of the Bohemian pattern. Like we always do when we develop a new Upton model, we make one from simpler wood first, as a test bench. We expect to make a lot of these 5/8 models, and want to have everything dialed in right from the start.
If you are a bassist looking for a professional grade 5/8 bass with a string length of around 39-40 inches, we can offer you something great. Fully carved versions currently start around $10,000 and hybrids at about $9,000. Get in touch!
