A Piece of Kay Bass History and Kay Bass Future?

Dave Anderson 21st October 2023
Gary shows off this piece of American bassmaking history in this new video! https://youtu.be/u0I_3I7INoI?si=QRplUJ-Yoog_ekXF This form is a piece of Kay Bass history - it was used to build most of the deluxe Kays, blonde S-7s and S-9s. The ¾ sized blonde basses sported a carved…

We've serviced vast multitudes of Kays and haven't seen a Selmer Kay even for a string change. In fact, our friends at the Kay Bass Registry haven't seen one either! We were excited to work on this example in need of restoration. More Kay history HERE. The bass was in rough structural shape. A broken bass bar lead to a partially collapsed top and back and badly deformed ff-holes. This was a perfect candidate for relamination…

Archives from the internet… There used to be a great Kay Double Bass Viol resource page created by Roger Stowers, and as we searched for it looking to reference a Kay model, it no longer exists after Rogers’s death. Steven Ayres has picked up the torch and now runs kaybass.us and we are sure he’ll […]
