Mittenwald Opus 129 – What a Carved Back!

Dave Anderson 30th June 2024
This Mittenwald Model Upton double bass displays all the simple functional beauty of the German basses that inspired it. But wow! Everybody in the shop wants to take this one home. Check out the center cut of the back, now ready to resonate for centuries. The lyrical ff-holes bring the whole shape together - pretty from every angle. Gorgeous varnish, Chris! This lovely Mittenwald double bass gets a hand-carved C-extension from Jack before going out! Dream about yours here or give the workshop a call: +1 (860) 535-9399

Mittenwald Hybrid Double Bass

Dave Anderson 30th March 2024
Many of the staff at Upton Bass are veteran bass players and when we daydream about our own Upton bass, we'd most likely land in the performance/price sweet spot of a flat back hybrid. You get all of the stability and toughness of a hybrid with the remarkable response of our lightweight flatbacks with the tone-developed 'propeller' bracing. Mittenwald Model Double Bass o241

Dave Anderson 2nd February 2024
This mild-mannered Mittenwald Double Bass has its gorgeous evening attire in the back! This Mittenwald is built with a flat back of well-figured Maple hand-varnished to a light-catching luster. Bravo gang! The Mittenwald brings the generous dimensions and rib depth of our Brescian to a gamba-cornered instrument. As with the basses of its namesake, the beauty is really in the wood and craftmanship of this unadorned style. A big precise delivery in this full-voiced bass - Jack just shook rafters with the bow! Looking to expand your knowledge of the construction and history of the double bass? Check out the…

“Watts” Mittenwald Model Double Bass

Dave Anderson 16th April 2020
This beautiful Mittenwald model Upton double bass was built as a big flatback five-string hybrid. The Mittenwald is a great gamba pattern for the low B, with plenty of depth and air volume. A classic build kept the straight fingerboard and antiqued hat pegs, plus rib bumpers and a custom angled endpin block. What really gave it the extra wow factor is the dark amber (maple syrup?) toned varnish that radiates golden highlights! We wanted to make sure this bass got its close-up as a color reference for anybody plotting a build. "Watt" Mittenwald Model Upton 5-String Double Bass
