The Upton Report Vol. 203 – What are you afraid of?

I was reading a forum thread the other day where someone was afraid it was “stupid”  to put an extension on his laminated bass. It was kismet reading that post as we have just completed a killer extension on a laminated Upton Bass for a dear friend of ours!  The bass was picked up today, and we talked about the post…and we came to the conclusion that the OP meant was “is it a waste of money?”.  Everyone’s situation is different…and it may seem off to put an extension on a bass when the extension costs almost as much as the bass can cost…that is until you look at your goals.  This is a “pit” bass where environmental extremes and close quarters make bringing a more expensive instrument, or solid wood bass, out of the question (to most, YOMV!).  So putting an extension on is something the owner is being required to do to play the repertoire they’re being paid to play.  That’s not stupid at all! That’s called getting the job done (and hopefully getting more jobs down the road!).

Life’s not black and white…shades of grey make a picture.  Do what you need to do to get the job done and don’t worry about what someone else may think is “stupid”.
