August Martin Ludwig Gemunder c1858 Born in Ingelfingen (Wurtemberg), Germany in 1814 and immigrated to Springfield, Massachusetts in 1846.  There is conflicting data about when he moved to New York and if his brother George (another fine maker!) worked with him upon his immigration to America.  If one of our sources is correct, this double bass bearing the date 1858 would have been made while in Springfield, MA.  - From the Universal Dictionary of Violin & Bow Makers by William Henley, "A truly wonderful genius whose craftsmanship never ebbed.". Oreste Martini (1893-1957) learned his craft from the great Mantuan maker Stefano Scarampella.  After his tutelage under master Stefano Scarampella, beginning at age 14, Martini was producing his own instruments by his early 20s. He began his career with a focus on double basses (reported to be a double bassist himself) but went on to craft many violins, violas, and cellos (He is credited with more than 300 violins, 10 violas, 50 cellos, and 45 basses).
