Description
Alfons Fantisek Vavra was a noted instrument maker in Prague, Czechoslovakia where was born in April of 1901, and where he died in May of 1957. His father, Jan Baptista Vavra, was his mentor. Vavra’s instruments were usually varnished either red or brown. He used several different styles of labels, and had many pupils throughout his career including Karel Vavra, Antonin Kolomaznik, and his children; son Alfons and daughter Ludmila.
This Vavra double bass was made in Prague, in 1931. It is a flat-back, with a fully-carved top. The instrument features Gamba corners, ebony “hat peg” tuners (which are original to the instrument), and a lovely honey amber oil varnish. It is a rugged bass, with a lot of character, and would be a perfect advanced student instrument. This bass has not yet been setup by Upton Bass. The price of the instrument includes the full Upton setup.
