Description

This Donald Gorman Double Bass made in 2000, is fully-carved with a canted flat back, inlaid purfling, and violin corners. It is set up with fine ebony components, brass tuning machines, and D’Addario Helicore Orchestral strings.

Hailing from New Brunswick, Gorman is one of just a handful of Canadian luthiers. Gorman was a upright bass player since the 70’s, and he decided to build his first instrument in 1994 despite not having any background in woodworking or lutherie. In a short time, his instruments gained the reputation of having exquisite craftsmanship, tone, and playability. Gorman’s basses are sought after internationally by professional musicians including Ed Barker, bassist for the Boston Symphony.

It takes about 4 months to complete each Donald Gorman Double Bass – he states “They are separate entities, not production items. What I love is the thought that in 200 years these basses will be in the hands of someone making beautiful music. I feel I am taking my place in an ancient tradition. You build the instrument and it builds you. Everything begins to fit.”
