Description
This John Juzek Master Art Double Bass (Prague, c.1930s) is a fully carved, classic Gamba design in great condition. Often imitated and faked, this bass is the genuine article – a classic for jazz. This bass was recently inspected and restored by the Upton Bass luthiers in our workshop. The restoration began by lifting the top off to install a new bass bar, sound post, and to glue and cleat existing cracks. It was noted that some interior work had been completed previously. A new ebony fingerboard was added, as well as a nut and saddle. It was fitted with a new Upton Bass bridge with adjusters and D’Addario Zyex strings.
This Juzek upright bass bears its original, hand-signed red label. Juzek labels were imprinted with the location of the Juzek shop, this one is stamped “Made in Czechoslovakia.” Jan Juzek was a violin maker in Prague who bought instruments from various craftsmen in the Bohemia region under his own name for import into the United States. For the Master Art series, the craftsmen adopted standard patterns of classic luthiers, including Stradivarius, Guarnerius, and Gagliano.
