Abraham Prescott in the House

Mattias 28th February 2025
Abraham Prescott (1789–1858) holds a special place in our New England hearts. The New Hampshire luthier built his first double bass in 1820, followed by around 200 more. Right now, we have several Prescott-related projects underway. A beautiful example of New England lutherie When a Prescott bass arrives, it’s always a special day. This one, acquired from a trusted colleague, is in remarkable condition—almost entirely original. While some previous repairs need to be reversed, the instrument’s integrity is intact. This restoration is about preserving the bass’s essence. We’ll address past repairs, correct some bad varnish work, and carefully go through…

“Tutu” Spalted Maple Concord Double Bass, Opus 220

UBassAdmin 4th March 2022
Dramatic flame shimmers through the back and sides of this special Spalted Maple Concord (2202022). We bought the entire tree of this lightning-struck Bigleaf Maple from the Pacific Northwest. It’s already resulted in some amazing instruments and this two-piece back sets that bar just a bit higher. Travel neck and a rare last set of Sloane tuners add elegant function to the light show going on in the back. There is precious little of this wood remaining, if you envision it in your project, act soon!

“Patterson” Concord Model Double Bass

UBassAdmin 24th July 2018

This was a “first” for us.  Now, don’t get us wrong…we’ve made plenty of fully carved basses over the years…almost 100 as of writing this blog post, but this is the first fully carved Concord model Upton Bass. Using the same stock of domestic maple as we do on almost all of the Concords (check out the Spalted!), and pairing it up with a German spruce top, this Concord is ready to bellow out luscious low notes.  Deep ribs going all the way up to the elongated neck…

“Spalted” Concord Model Upton Double Bass

UBassAdmin 27th July 2016
This may be the wildest Concord yet!  This unique log has gone into several incredible basses, and for our Head Luthier Eric Roy, this Concord revisits a special log not used since the 2011 & 2013 ISB competition basses, resulting in one of the most stunning instruments ever built by Upton Bass. We got to watch Eric build this instrument, stealing moments and sipping coffee while he steamed and bent the tricky figured Maple into the lyrical Busetto curves of this Prescott-inspired masterpiece.  It was created during the process of re-doing this website, and its build is featured in many shots throughout, as well…
