The 1980 Benedikt Lang Double Bass is a classic Mittenwald style bass.
Made by Benedikt Lang in Germany, this instrument is reminiscent of the workshop double basses made from the 1960’s to 1980’s. German bass making was at its height in the 1980’s when this bass was completed, and at the time, these basses were highly desirable. This bass is labelled with a handwritten date (1980) by its maker, and is stamped “Mittenwald/Karwendel.” Mittenwald is the region of Germany where this bass originated, and Karwendel is the largest range of the Northern Limestone Alps—a further description of the region.
Mittenwald style basses are considered the working man’s bass: stout bodied basses known for their big bass tone. This Benedikt (Benedict) Lang double bass follows those classic dimensions with a simple gamba design, high shoulders, and outside linings on the deep ribs. The corners are slightly rounded, which was the German approach during the 1980’s. It is solid wood with a round back. It features a rosewood tailpiece and it set up and ready to play with Thomastik Spirocore strings.
Our luthiers suggest regular maintenance on all basses, however, we recommend a higher level of care overall for solid wood basses such as this one. The listed sales price is reflective of the instrument’s current condition.
