Upton Bass Karr Model 5-String Travel Double Bass 2014 Opus 488
This 2014 flatback hybrid Karr Model has many attractive features – Five String, Removable / Adjustable travel neck, and a deep dark finish.
Built with the full Travel Bass treatment – lightened neck, tuners and parts, this unique Karr Model 5-String double bass also includes a UB clamshell travel case. This bass has traveled extensively by plane, train & automobile! It even comes with one of our early prototype minimalistic hard shell cases, so not only is this bass travel-ready, but we could FedEx ship it to your front door!
The Karr Model has unparalleled upper bout access and reach, extra long neck, while retaining enormous bass response with its long lower bout. This particular varnish appears dark chocolate brown at first glance with dark amber highlights appearing in the light, set off with the deeply recurved carved top.
Well played and “broken in,” this upright bass is super responsive, very fun to play, with a nuanced deep cello voice under the bow. Currently set up with a high C 5th string, it also affords many possibilities, a low B, or even a four – this bass package also includes a 4-string nut, bridge, and tailpiece, a full extra setup if you’d like to leave one tuner empty and play as a traditional four! With the travel neck, it is also possible for Upton Bass to craft another fully devoted 4-string neck so the player can easily switch.
