Hawkes & Son Concert Double Bass Restoration Project, circa 1896
This Hawkes double bass restoration should be a fairly straightforward project where the new owner will end up with a truly exceptional vintage instrument. Dated 1896, the Hawkes Concert model was the top of their lineup, featuring a canted round back and pronounced arching with generous bout and rib proportions. A well-freshened version of this bass will be ready for generations of majestic low frequencies.
This Hawkes Concert has had repairs through the years, some of which are executed better than others, plus wear and tear and some modifications that don’t do it justice. Fingerboard overstand could be adjusted. The bass needs to be opened up and gone through, with old patches redone, and a C-bout repaired. We’d like to see it with scroll plates and appropriate tuners befitting its fine English heritage. Naturally it would be completed with the finest Upton setup from scroll to tailpiece.
All and all, not too daunting, and a great opportunity for the player to participate with setup and aesthetic preferences. See video below where Eric walks through the details!
