This Horst Grunert “Gasparo da Salo” Model Double Bass was built in Penzberg Germany in 1985.
It has only one previous owner, and was kept in excellent condition. Constructed of the finest tone woods, the top is double purfled and hand carved from mountain spruce of two adjoined pieces, while the flat back, ribs, and neck are from well-flamed maple.
The finish is slightly shaded using a reddish-brown traditional oil varnish. This Grunert double bass features violin corners, heavy brass individual tuning machines, and an adjustable bridge. Included with the instrument is a certificate of authenticity signed by the maker, a Mooradian bag, and an assortment of endpins and other accessories.
Horst Grunert learned instrument making from his father Erich, who hailed from the Vogtland region of Germany, a region well-known for its history in the string-instrument tradition. Grunert instruments are prized for their workmanship and tone. The Grunert workshop has seen countless vintage instruments over the years–including many from master makers–which has enabled him to produce highly acclaimed renditions of the famed originals. Some light research on double bassists who play Grunert instruments reveals a list of top players from major orchestras worldwide. A renowned UK luthier wrote that there have been numerous attempts over the years to copy the grand patterns of Gasparo da Salo; however, Horst Grunert is the only luthier to create a copy that is “superb in every respect.”
